Top 10 signs that your car needs a service


Apart from following the manufacturer's required or recommended service intervals, there are signs that will tell you when your car could do with a service. Listen to what your car is telling you, and you could avoid getting stranded at the side of the road.

  • Your car stalls frequently
  • Acceleration is not as good as usual
  • You seem to be using more fuel than you usually do
  • The car just doesn't 'feel' right
  • The engine still runs after switching off the ignition, making a knocking sound
  • The engine starts making noises that weren't there before, like knocking or ticking
  • The car 'surges' without any additional pressure on the accelerator, or loses power
  • The brake pedal has to be pushed harder to engage the brakes, or fluctuates with a jerky motion when you try to stop
  • Your car is pulling to the left or right when braking
  • The steering needs constant adjustment to maintain the same direction
